Bartender

The job description of bartenders involves the preparation of alcoholic drinks for the customers of bars, restaurants, cocktail lounges, and other areas where these beverages are served. While some people underestimate the amount of skill it takes to be a bartender, they soon learn that it’s not easy. Bartenders need to know the best combinations of beverages, its alcohol content, and the taste it will produce. In most cases, the best drinks are formulated through trial and error.

For most bartenders though, the main task is not to experiment with different drinks but to serve standard formulas quickly and accurately. In general, bartenders determine if customers are of legal age, take the orders, and serve the drinks. Some customers may have their own preference for the alcoholic drink. In this case, the bartender is obliged to follow it depending on the rules of the bar or restaurant.

Should You Pursue a Career in Bartending?

Bartending requires hard work, persistence, and the ability to mingle with different types of customers. Depending on your specific preference, being a bartender can take you anywhere from private clubs, cruise ships, hotels, to trains. The most highly-paid bartenders are also those who have shown their trustworthiness to the employer.

This is because in many cases, bartenders are the best person to order the supplies for the establishment. They know which products are best-sellers, the stock inventory of the bar, and the ingredients that are most likely to be in-demand. Those who are trusted with inventory management and the actual ordering of the supplies earn most and can enjoy a highly rewarding career.

Career Outlook

The data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics suggest that bartenders earn an average salary of $7.42 an hour. However, this does not reflect the true picture of what bartenders and people in the service business earns because it does not include tips. For example, bartenders that work in bars can receive tips that are more than double their salary.
