Online Political Science Degrees

The workings of government and public policy can be fascinating subjects.  Students interested in these fields might find political science a good fit.  Political science degrees at all levels can be earned at online schools, providing students with much-needed flexibility in their studies.

Political science is a diverse field that can lead to many kinds of occupations.   For some, an undergraduate degree in political science is a common stepping stone to law school.  Although many political science jobs require advanced degrees, there are entry level options for policy and market analysts, writers, and research assistants.  Other job possibilities include being a lobbyist, legislative aide, campaign manager, or consultant.   More than half of all political scientists end up working for the federal government in some capacity.  Others work for nonprofits or civic and professional organizations.

While in school, political science students can expect coursework on types of governments, public policy, statistics, ideology, international and current affairs, and economics.  Generally, since political science is such a broad field, students will specialize in a particular area.  Successful political science students have strong research and communication skills.  Students will likely do computer-based research as well as primary research such as conducting interviews and surveys.  Further, they will be expected to be strong writers and speakers.  Many students will also spend time gaining experience through internships or volunteer opportunities.  These core skills can be of great benefit when entering the job market.

The job outlook for political scientists is good, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment is expected to grow faster than average.  This prediction is based on the observation that demand for political research is increasing as more and more people become interested in public policy issues related to health care, the environment, and foreign affairs.  As of May 2008, the median wage for political scientists was $104,130, but there is a large range both above and below that median.  For a detailed breakdown of salary, see the salary survey at the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
